The Best 20 Years Ever!

BerMUN 2011 celebrated an enormously anticipated milestone. The conference that started with just a few students turned 20 years old with an attendance of more than 700 international attendants.

Bearmun was pleased to be part of the celebration and cover all the events. As in past years, the team covered the Opening Ceremonies, committees and Closing Ceremonies, however this year's guests and speakers and the product put out by our press team marked the conference as not only a celebration, it also raised the bar for future BerMUNs.

During the next week the team will be publishing the last edition of the paper. On the blog students will be able to read about the closing ceremonies and other articles our journalists have been working on. The video productions seen during the conference will also be posted as well as numerous picture galleries.

As in previous years, Berlin Model United Nations 2011 will include a press team. The Press Team publishes three news issues of the BEARMUN newspaper during the conference, including one pre-edition and a post-conference digital edition. Students may apply to work in the following areas: reporting, copy editing (limited), layout and design, photography, cartoon illustration, and digital production (limited). We are looking for committed team members with diverse perspectives on issues.

Bearmun covers various aspects of the conference such as the general atmosphere, committee progress, participant perspectives, director and advisor expectations, special assemblies, free time activities, current events associated with the conference, Berlin tourism, and special interest features.

This year, our pre-edition is bound to be the best ever since we will begin our educational process in September. Our research will result in a clear understanding of the conference theme and foundational articles for all participants at the conference.

So if any students are interested and would like to take part, please email us at bermunmedia@yahoo.com and we will forward an application form. For writing and editing positions a short writing sample is required. Layout (design) applicants need to be familiar with the Adobe InDesign program on Macs. Photographers need to have their own DSLR cameras, they will not be provided.

Only applications postmarked before September 1st will be considered.

We look forward to the collaboration of many students from many countries in an effort for "the best Bermun ever."

Girls Don’t Encounter Terrorists in the Kitchen

Mingling together in front of the large, professional forum at the center of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, delegates of this year’s BERMUN2 stood waiting for the General Assembly to begin. As the previous day of debating proved to be tiring and it was also early in the morning on a Saturday, many of the delegates were drowsy as they shared their hopes for the final part of the conference.

Expectations were mixed, with delegates expressing their different opinions of how the Assembly would turn out. Jona Pomerance, the delegate of Ecuador, shared his belief that, “It’s interesting, you can hear what the other comittees have established.“ On the other hand, Andrin Solèr, delegate of Liberia, simply hoped for the General Assembly, “that the resolutions would not be too boring.“

The discussion over the resolution submitted by Africa was certainly the opposite, when the defiant delegate of Lebanon proclaimed that there was “No need to educate girls up to the age of 14“. He also provactively stated, "You won't encounter terrorists in the kitchen", resulting in both outrage and laughter from his fellow delegates and ensured the quick awakenings of any other sleepy delegates.
